Short-Term Intervention Program
-
This 10-day program meets for two weeks, from 9:00am-12:30pm, in-person at the regional recovery high school in Brockton. The Upper Course is designed to engage high school students in an immersive experience in the foundations of healthy growth and development. This short-term intervention program is run by a team of experts and is grounded in the basic belief that adolescents deserve an opportunity to develop a deeper level of self-awareness to fully assess how their thoughts, feelings, and actions are impacting their current life situation. Independence Academy believes when adolescents are engaging in high-risk or problematic behaviors (i.e., substance use), a proactive intervention is a more effective approach than traditionally punitive or isolating measures. The Upper Course provides schools with an alternative to suspension for youth following substance-related offenses or it can also be used as a proactive measure for students identified as “high-risk” given their level of substance use. Referrals may be be made directly by families, schools, or treatment professionals. Program is funded by the MA Department of Public Health so there is no cost to participate. Families or school district must provide transportation.

Adolescent & Young Adult Substance Use Treatment
A comprehensive assessment by a specialist is highly recommended as a first step unless the situation requires emergency care. Understanding what level of treatment a young person may need is best determined through a comprehensive assessment by providers who specialize in adolescents and behavioral health.
Interface: Mental Health Provider Match Service
The Town of Scituate has contracted with William James College to offer the Interface Referral Service to all residents since September 2014. 283 Scituate individuals have been helped through Interface, as of November 30, 2018. The vast majority of individuals served so far have been adolescents, and most callers found out about the service through Scituate Public Schools. The service includes Scituate students who reside in Boston. We hope to make more agencies and individuals aware of this free, confidential match service through our recent redesign project. We are working with stakeholders in primary care offices and other community partners to promote Interface. Materials are now available through Scituate Public Schools Counseling, Scituate Pediatrics, Cohasset Family Practice, Scituate Social Service Department/Town Social Worker, Scituate Council on Aging, South Shore Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department, Hingham District Court and South Shore Peer Recovery Center, as well as local churches, clinician’s offices, and businesses. If you would like printed materials for your organization, please contact Annmarie Galvin at agalvin@scituatema.gov.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Intake: Call 1 888 244-6843 between 9:00am-5:00pm Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; and 8:00am-6:00pm Tuesday and Thursday. Plan for 15-20 minutes. When you call, you will speak with a Master’s Level clinician to complete a confidential intake. You will be asked for some basic contact information about yourself or your family member, such as type of insurance, your availability to meet with someone, and general information about what you are concerned about. You may make special requests, such as proximity to home, provider ability to provide remote counseling (telehealth services), or gender preference of providers.
Making a match: INTERFACE will begin to search for a match by utilizing a tailored search process to find the service you have requested. Within a few days, you can expect to hear back with an update on the status of their research.
Providing matches: Within two weeks (usually less), INTERFACE will provide the following information for one or more counselors/providers: the provider’s name, credentials, location, and phone number. You will make your first appointment directly with the counselor.
Following-Up: INTERFACE will follow up in a few weeks to see if you have been able to connect with the counselor(s), and if so, how it is going. INTERFACE is committed to supporting you until you feel you have found a successful match.
Closing a referral: Once you have found a successful match, INTERFACE will close the referral process with you. However, if you need additional support in the future for other referrals or if the match does not work out for some reason, please know that you can always call again.

Where to get Narcan on the South Shore
Nasal naloxone –commonly called Narcan – is a prescription drug that is used to stop an opioid overdose. All Scituate first responders are equipped with this life-saving medicine, and residents are encouraged to always call 911 if an overdose is suspected. Narcan is also available to anyone who might be a bystander to an overdose in Massachusetts - no presrcription needed! If a member of your household has a history of opioid dependence, including those in recovery, you are strongly encouraged to carry Narcan. It is now available without a prescription at Scituate Pharmacy, CVS Pharmacy on Cole Parkway, and at other Walgreen’s and Rite Aid locations. You may call ahead for a “standing order naloxone prescription” which will be covered through your own insurance co-payment, no doctor required.
Alternatively, free and confidential kits are available through Manet Community Health Center, Learn to Cope, and locally at South Shore Peer Recovery. Simply stop by the center at 51 Cole Parkway in Scituate Harbor during normal business hours (M-F, 9:30-5:30) or call 781 378-0453 to make other arrangements.
