Nitrous Oxide

“LAUGHING GAS”

“GALAXY GAS”

While nitrous oxide is safely used in everyday life — from making whipped cream to use as an anesthetic in medical and dental procedures — it has also been misused to get high. Recently, a particular brand of nitrous oxide, Galaxy Gas, has gained attention on TikTok due to its misuse.

To be clear, nitrous oxide misuse is not prevalent among students in Scituate, past or present. If/when inhalant misuse does occur, it is typically among younger teens, ages 12 - 17. (Different from the U.K, where it is more common in young adult club scene). Research suggests that the discussion of inhalants, such as nitrous oxide and other dangerous household chemicals including some glues, paints, and compressed air dusters, can lead to unintended curiosity among adolescents. For this reason, we do not highlight this topic extensively in school settings to reduce the risk of experimentation. This differs from how we handle education for commonly used substances like alcohol and marijuana, where research shows that open discussions at home and in school help prevent misuse. SPS employs a holistic approach to prevention that is rooted in best practices and skill-building that buffer students from use of any substance.

Due to the recent social media attention, we want caregivers to be aware of the potential risks associated with emerging social media trends. It is important for all of us to stay informed, as substance misuse and viral trends can impact anyone.

Risks from nitrous oxide misuse:

  • Dizziness, dissociation, disorientation, loss of balance, impaired memory and cognition, and weakness in the legs

  • Risk for falls and accidents during intoxication

  • Health impacts from long-term use include nerve and brain damage; though it does not appear to cause chemical dependence

What caregivers can do at home:

  • Store potentially harmful substances securely and out of children’s reach. This includes not only alcohol and medications but also everyday household products that could be misused as inhalants. We recommend reviewing items in your home to ensure that inhalant products are accounted for

  • Keep an eye out for unusual packages delivered to the home

  • Plan for supervision after-school

  • Make sure parental expectations around substance use are clear
